Hua Hin or Phuket for Retirement

These two come up together more than any other pair in Thailand. They are both coastal, both have long-established foreign populations, and both work on a retirement extension. They differ on four things: how you get home, what happens if you get sick, what it costs, and how busy it is.

Getting home
Funerals, grandchildren, and medical appointments back home all turn on how hard it is to get on a plane.
Phuket has direct flights to Australia. Jetstar flies to Perth, Melbourne and Sydney. Phuket International also carries a broad long-haul and regional network, so most trips home are one flight or one connection.
There are no international flights from Hua Hin. Getting home means travelling to Bangkok by road or rail first, then flying.
Healthcare
Both towns have private hospitals set up for foreign patients, with English-speaking staff and direct billing arrangements with international insurers.
- Hua Hin. Bangkok Hospital Hua Hin holds Joint Commission International accreditation, effective 1 March 2024. San Paulo Hospital is the second private option, 75 beds with a 24-hour emergency department. Hua Hin Hospital is the public hospital.
- Phuket. A JCI-accredited private hospital, with three major projects under construction: a BDMS wellness centre, a 212-bed Bumrungrad hospital due to open in 2027, and a 300-bed public Songklanagarind hospital running from 2026 to 2029.
Thailand has no public healthcare system that covers foreign residents anywhere in the country. Private hospitals bill in full and most want payment before treatment. What you need in either town is set out on the health insurance page.
What it costs
Hua Hin is cheaper, and the gap is widest on housing.
- A one-bedroom condo in Hua Hin commonly runs 12,000 to 18,000 baht a month.
- A house with a garden runs roughly 25,000 to 45,000 baht a month.
- Published guides put a pool villa on Phuket 30 to 50 per cent above the Hua Hin equivalent.
Food, utilities and transport track each other more closely.
Rent short term before you sign anything. A twelve-month lease taken in your first fortnight is the most common expensive mistake in both towns.
Pace
Hua Hin is quieter than Phuket. It has less hustle and bustle, and expats living there consistently report that as the reason they stay.
Phuket is busier. It carries far more tourist traffic, the road network is under more pressure, and the tourist areas run at a different tempo to the residential ones. Where you live on the island changes the experience considerably.
Hua Hin also sits within reach of Bangkok, around three hours by road or rail. From Phuket, Bangkok is a flight.
Golf
- Hua Hin. Royal Hua Hin opened in 1924 and was the first international-standard 18-hole course in Thailand. Black Mountain opened in 2007 to a Phil Ryan design, now 27 holes, and hosted the Asian Tour's Black Mountain Masters in 2009 and 2010 and the Swedish Golf Tour's Black Mountain Invitational from 2013 to 2016. Pineapple Valley and Springfield Royal are also within a short drive.
- Phuket. The Canyon Course at Blue Canyon Country Club hosted the Johnnie Walker Classic three times, including Tiger Woods' win in 1998. Red Mountain and Loch Palm are on the same island.
If golf is the reason you are moving, both work.
Which one
Phuket, unless a quieter town is your priority.
Phuket has the direct flights, the deeper medical infrastructure, and more of everything.
Hua Hin wins when quiet is what you are actually after, when the budget is tight enough that the housing gap changes what you can afford, or when Bangkok being a drive rather than a flight does not matter to you.
